Sewage released into bay after circuit breaker short in Fall River

May 05, 2023May 05, 2023

A circuit breaker issue at Fall River's wastewater treatment facility resulted in the release of around 10 million gallons of partly treated wastewater into Mount Hope Bay early Sunday.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Fall River officials notified DEM that a circuit breaker at the city's wastewater facility shorted around midnight.

This resulted in wastewater bypassing the plant's pumps, causing a sanitary sewer overflow and leading to "a precautionary closure of the Rhode Island section of the Mount Hope Bay (Growing Area 17) and the Kickemuit River (Growing Area 5)," according to a Facebook post from the R.I. DEM.

By 11 a.m. Sunday, the Fall River wastewater treatment facility returned to normal operations after the circuit breaker was reset, the DEM announced. It did not anticipate additional shellfish closures beyond the two areas.

"DEM appreciates the partnership of The City of Fall River in protecting public health and will update this notice if necessary later today or tomorrow," the R.I. DEM stated on Sunday.
