Aug 25, 2023Moorhead reminds residents to disconnect sump pump hoses from sanitary sewer system
MOORHEAD—The City of Moorhead is reminding residents to redirect sump pump hoses ahead of our late spring melting period.
Residents are asked to disconnect their sump pumps from the sanitary sewer and direct drainage to outdoor hoses.
Heavy sump pump discharge can overwhelm the sanitary sewer system and cause basement backups, the city said in a release Saturday, April 1.
To avoid a frozen discharge hose, the city recommends using a straight PVC pipe to drain water when temperatures are below freezing. The PVC pipe should be angled away from your home so the line drains completely and a splash block should be placed at the end to disperse discharge.
The city also reminds residents to be courteous to neighbors when choosing where to discharge sump pump water.
